Pedestrian Dies in Rukiga Hit-and-Run Accident

RUKIGA – Police in Rukiga district have recorded a hit and run incident that resulted in a fatal accident, where an unidentified motor vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian identified as Bruce Bayabwengi, aged 64.

Bayabwengi was a resident of Kanaba cell, Nyabungo ward, Muhanga town council, Rukiga.

The incident took place on 25/08/2023 around 01:00Am at Bukinda trading centre along Kabale Ntungamo highway in Rukiga district.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the spokesperson of Kigezi Sub region, Bayabwengi was leaving a bar in Bukinda trading centre and was crossing the highway to his nearby home, which was situated along the road.

Unfortunately, due to his intoxicated state, he was struck and killed on the spot by a speeding car. The car, which was heading from Ntungamo to Kabale, fled the scene.

The authorities visited the scene of the accident, but the driver and the motor vehicle responsible could not be identified.

The deceased’s body was taken home, and pending a postmortem examination, it will be handed over to his relatives for a proper burial.

Maate confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to locate and impound the vehicle involved in the accident.

The hit and run incident has been documented as a case file at Rukiga Central Police Station under reference number TAR 20/2023.
