NEWS – Interpol Kenya has successfully apprehended Mathew Kirabo, a fugitive who had been evading capture for several years following a Red Notice issued by Interpol Uganda.
The suspect’s arrest occurred on September 12, 2023, thanks to the diligent efforts of Interpol Kenya in identifying and detaining him.
Kirabo had absconded court bail at Mukono High Court while facing trial for the murder of Desire Mirembe, an unfortunate event that took place on July 10, 2015. Mirembe’s life was tragically cut short, and her body was discovered in the Lugazi sugarcane plantations.
SCP Fred Enanga, the spokesperson for Uganda Police, revealed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (CID) had processed a warrant for Kirabo’s arrest. This warrant was subsequently handed over to Interpol Uganda, enabling them to locate and provisionally detain the wanted fugitive.
Enanga elaborated that Kirabo had been declared a fugitive and listed in Interpol’s database of wanted individuals, leading to the issuance of a Red Notice in November 2021.
Interpol diligently monitored the suspect’s movements until his eventual arrest on September 12, 2023. Kirabo will soon be transferred to Interpol Uganda and then handed over to Mukono High Court, with close coordination between the ODPP and CID at Kampala Metropolitan Police Headquarters.
Enanga expressed his appreciation for the relentless efforts of both Interpol Kenya and Uganda in tracking down and apprehending the wanted fugitive.
This arrest underscores the strong and effective collaboration between the law enforcement and legal agencies of Uganda and Kenya, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation in pursuing justice.
