KANUNGU – Police in Kanungu District are currently conducting an investigation into the death of a 52-year-old man identified as Johnson Ntegyerize, who was also known as Kazungu.
He was a resident of Kameme village in Kimbibiri parish, Kihihi sub-county, Kanungu district.
The incident occurred between the 12th and 13th of September, 2023, at an unspecified time during the day.
According to a statement provided by the police, on the aforementioned dates, Anzirwe Anna, who was an aunt to the deceased, became concerned when she couldn’t reach him.
She decided to inquire with relatives in Kameme cell and Kambuuga to determine if he had returned home, but they informed her that he hadn’t.
The police statement also reveals that a search was conducted by local residents in Matanda, but it yielded no results until Bizimungu informed them that the deceased had last been seen with individuals named Baguma and Makyemakye, who are suspected of being poachers.
Makyemakye was apprehended by the residents and led them to a location within Queen Elizabeth National Park.
At the scene, they discovered the deceased’s gumboots, a panga with what appeared to be rusty blood, a torn trouser, a yellow/pink shirt, skeletal remains of leg bones, and a decomposing skull, all suspected to belong to the deceased.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed that the police were informed by David Ntegyerize, and they subsequently visited the crime scene in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The mentioned exhibits were recovered at the scene, and a postmortem examination was conducted at Matanda Health Center.
Maate also stated that four suspects have been arrested to assist with the ongoing investigations.
