OMORO – In Omoro district, a 23-year-old, Opiyo Ivan Lanyet, a peasant farmer from Kiteng village, has been arrested for the alleged rape and murder of Abong Veronica, a 50-year-old female peasant from the same village.
The incident occurred on October 1, 2023, at 3:00 AM. Returning from a funeral, the suspect initially stole a hen and its eggs from Latigi Alice’s home before proceeding to the second victim’s residence.
Breaking into the house, he raped and then fatally strangled the victim. Post-murder, he stole her clothes and set the house ablaze, rendering the body unidentifiable. The suspect was later apprehended.
SCP Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police spokesperson, strongly condemned these acts of violence against elderly individuals, emphasizing zero tolerance for such assaults on vulnerable women.
“We maintain zero tolerance for all acts of sexual violence against vulnerable women. The 23-year-old suspect will be charged with Rape, Murder, Arson, and Theft,” stated Enanga.
