Rukungiri Woman Murdered in Cold Blood, One Suspect Arrested

RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a 73-year-old woman named Kogyire Lydia, a Mukiga and a resident of Bugarama cell in Bugangari Parish, Bugangari sub-county.

The incident occurred yesterday around 6:00 PM, as reported in the official police statement.

The case of murder was reported to the authorities by Atwongirwe Piason, also a Mukiga and a teacher at Nyanganjara Primary School, who resides in Bugarama cell, Bugangari Parish, Bugangari sub-county within Rukungiri District.

According to the police statement, on the day of the incident, Kogyire Lydia was seen by her biological son, Akankwasa Celeb, while she was carrying out her domestic chores in the morning at her home.

At approximately 5:30 PM, Turyakira Jackline encountered Akankwasa Celeb and Ainembabazi Elias (the deceased’s grandson) at Akankwasa’s home while she was returning from Bugangari church to her own residence.

She exchanged greetings with them, and Ainembabazi Elias mentioned that he had come to visit his grandmother but was unable to locate her.

Turyakira Jackline proceeded to her home, which was just a short distance from the deceased’s residence. After changing her clothes, she went to inform the deceased of a message from the church, as was her usual practice.

Upon her arrival at the deceased’s home, she discovered that the main house was open but received no response when she called out. She proceeded to check the kitchen, where she found the door temporarily closed with a padlock that was not locked.

Upon opening the door, she tragically discovered the lifeless body of Kogyire Lydia.Immediately, she alerted Akankwasa Celeb and Ainembabazi Elias (the grandson) and sought assistance from others.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, reported that a murder case was officially registered at Bugangari police station under reference number SD Ref: 06/10/09/2023.

Additionally, the crime scene was examined, and the body was transported to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Akankwasa Celeb has been taken into custody to aid in the ongoing investigation.

According to Maate, inquiries are ongoing, and there are plans to revisit the crime scene for further documentation and evidence collection.
