Spate of Domestic Violence Murders Puts Uganda Police on High Alert

KAMPALA – Uganda Police Force is grappling with a surge in domestic violence-related murders, as disclosed by SCP Fred Enanga, the spokesperson for the force.

Tragically, incidents such as a husband’s stabbing leading to suicide in Rwizi Region and Kiruhura have been reported.

On September 28, 2023, at Kamuzinzi cell, Kashongi sub county, 19-year-old Akampaobusingye Allen fatally stabbed her 26-year-old husband, Akatwijuka Innocent, citing infidelity and neglect of their 2-year-old child as motives.

In Greater Bushenyi and Buhweju, Kakuru Innocent was arrested for allegedly hacking his 68-year-old mother, Kantayomba Faridah, to death on the same day in Ekinoni village, Rugongo parish.

Ssenyonjo Leonard, a 24-year-old from Matongo village, Kabulasoke, is in custody in Katonga and Kanoni Gomba for allegedly beating his wife, Allen Ssenyonjo, on September 25, 2023.

The victim, rendered unconscious during the assault in the garden, later succumbed to her injuries at home.

In Busoga North and Buyende, Tigawalana Yoweri is in custody for the alleged murder of his step-son, Bakaswirewa Aniyani, aged one and a half years.

The assault occurred on September 29, 2023, when the suspect attacked his wife and child while she sought treatment at a clinic.

Enanga strongly condemned these domestic murders, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and care within households.

He urged spouses and parents to avoid resorting to violence and taking the law into their own hands.
