RUKIGA: Commercial Officer on the spot Over Misappropriation of funds and Misconduct

RUKIGA: Rukiga District in southwestern Uganda is embroiled in controversy, with allegations of misappropriation of funds and misconduct surrounding its District Commercial Officer (DCO), Mr. Agaba Nelson.

The accusations range from mismanaging funds earmarked for Parish Development Model (PDM) initiatives to refusing to provide financial records for a USAID-supported Civil Society Organization (CSO).

The storm began with accusations of misappropriating over 15 million Ugandan Shillings meant for PDM initiatives. These funds were supposed to facilitate meetings and training sessions for over 30 PDM SACCO beneficiaries in Rukiga District. However, Mr. Agaba Nelson, along with his supervisors, diverted these funds for undisclosed purposes, leaving the intended beneficiaries in a lurch.

Adding to the scrutiny, Mr. Agaba Nelson faces accusations related to his tenure at COMEI, a CSO based in Bukinda and supported by USAID. Despite leaving his position, Mr. Nelson has failed to hand over office and financial reports, causing concern over accountability.

Mr. Nelson’s appointment as District Commercial Officer also raised questions, with allegations suggesting he secured the position through connections with the current Chairperson LCV, Mr. Mbabazi Robert.

Reportedly serving as Robert’s Chief Campaign Agent during the 2021 General Elections, Nelson is accused of orchestrating a rigged electoral process, raising doubts about his qualifications and the transparency of his selection.

The revelations have sparked outrage among local stakeholders, prompting demands for a thorough investigation and accountability measures. Despite the allegations, Mr. Agaba Nelson and Rukiga District authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but public pressure may force action.

As the controversy unfolds, stakeholders await answers and decisive actions to restore trust and integrity in Rukiga District’s administration, ensuring proper utilization of public and donor funds for the benefit of the community.
