KITGUM – The 5 Division Court Martial, led by Colonel Ismail Sendagire, has dismissed four soldiers from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces and sentenced them to one year in prison following a public trial at Lagot Parish, Mucwini Sub-County in Kitgum district.
The charges stemmed from the torture of Omon Nelson on December 11, 2023.
Colonel Sendagire stated, “This court hereby sentences Cpl Odong Richard Burton, Pte Mongu Acel Sunday, Pte Ogwang Denish, and Pte Omara Martin Henry to dismissal with disgrace and one year imprisonment at Uganda government prison Lira.”
He added that Pte Omara Morish was acquitted as charges against him were dropped. Kitgum District’s Resident District Commissioner, Ebil Jimmy Sseggawa, commended the Court for its diligent work in dispensing justice.
Sseggawa assured the locals that security in Lagot detach would be strengthened for the benefit of the country. He urged collaboration with security agencies and advised against acts of injustice.
Deputy Defence Spokesperson Col Deo Akiiki encouraged citizens to utilize the enhanced security for productive economic activities, especially in agriculture.
“Use the peace to develop yourselves and engage in government programs like the Parish development model, Operation Wealth Creation, among others,” said Col Akiiki.
The local community expressed satisfaction with the UPDF 5 Division Court Martial’s judgment.
The Court proceedings were attended by the 5 Division Deputy Commander, Col Gai Mpandwa, 505 Brigade Commander Col Patrick Opera, Kitgum District Internal Security Officer Simon, Kitgum District Local Leaders, Religious leaders, and the local community.
