KABALE – Seven Senior Five students at St Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale District have been arrested for engaging in a disruptive strike and causing substantial damage to school property estimated to be worth millions of shillings.
The detained individuals are Abasa Andrew, Agaba Willy, Ahurira Casbert, Munezero Fredrick, Amanya Nickson, Irakiza Timothy, and Mucunguzi Anthony, and they are currently held at Kabale Central Police Station.
The students are suspected of orchestrating the violent strike, during which they broke window glasses in the administration block and several classrooms. Their motive was reportedly a demand for the reinstatement of their fellow classmates who had been suspended. This incident occurred on November 23, 2023.
Earlier, on the same date, the school management had suspended six students, namely Byamugisha Nicholas, Aine Ronie, Namara Meledizikia, Nshabamukama Samuel, Atukunda Paddy, Kansiime Assan, and Tugineyo Brave. These students were suspended for allegedly assaulting a senior one student named Nuwahabyona Special, who is presently undergoing treatment at Rushoroza Health Center due to allegations of theft involving Ugx 40,000.
The 53 students of Senior Five have been suspended from the school, pending a final decision on their fate by the school board of governors, who are scheduled to convene for a meeting. Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, stated that Kabale police received information about the incident. A team of police officers, led by OC Station Kabale ASP Akanyijuka Andrew, promptly intervened by dispersing the striking students and restoring normalcy to the situation.
