CBC Machine Lies Idle in Kisoro – Parliamentary Health Committee Uncovers

KISORO – A parliamentary health team has discovered that a complete blood count (CBC) machine at Busanza Health Centre IV in Kisoro District is inactive due to a lack of electricity

A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test. It’s used to look at overall health and find a wide range of conditions, including anemia, infection and leukemia. A complete blood count test measures Red blood cells, which carry oxygen, White blood cells, which fight infection, Hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, Hematocrit, the amount of red blood cells in the blood and Platelets, which help blood to clot

During their oversight role in Kigezi sub-region today, the Health Committee of Parliament, led by Hon. Dr. Kamara Nicholas, discovered that Busanza Health Centre IV falls short of the qualifications necessary for its designation. Hon. Ayebare Margaret Rwebyambu, representing Mbarara district, emphasized the facility’s deficiencies, including the absence of a theater, blood transfusion services, operational and expansion space, isolation and general wards, and an inadequate number of staff.

Rwebyambu criticized district officials for neglecting their duty to supervise and ensure timely services in government facilities. She highlighted the heightened risk in a border sub-county where emergencies can occur at any time.

The Senior Nursing Officer at Busanza Health Centre IV, Agnes Ayinkamire, acknowledged the government’s unfulfilled promises to establish a theater but commended the parliamentary health committee for reaching grassroots levels. She expressed hope that the committee’s involvement could expedite the realization of these promises.

The parliamentary team also visited Kisoro Hospital and observed the poor condition of its theater, posing a threat to patients and medical staff. Hon. Dr. Nicholas Kamara pledged that the committee would compile a comprehensive report to present before parliament, particularly during the next financial year’s budget considerations. He assured that information from the Kisoro district health office regarding all health facilities would be thoroughly evaluated, with priority given to addressing the identified issues.
