President Museveni to Launch UN-Funded Youth Program during National Youth Day Celebrations in Kabale

KABALE – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to launch a United Nations-funded program focused on youth during the National Youth Day celebrations in Kabale District.

The Assistant Commissioner of Youth and Children in the Ministry of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, Mondo Kyateeka, announced this exciting development today during a pre-visit tour to assess key areas for the event. The celebrations will be held on the 12th of August 2023 at Kigezi High School Lower Playground in Kabale Municipality.

This year’s celebration centers around the theme, “Accelerating Recovery from Covid-19 and Full Implementation of the 2030 Agenda: The Role of the Youths.” It highlights the significance of youth involvement in overcoming pandemic challenges and progressing towards the 2030 development goals.

Kyateeka and his team also held a preparatory meeting with District and Kabale Municipality authorities, chaired by Nelson Nshangabasheija, the District LC5 Chairperson, on behalf of the District Resident Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma. During the meeting, Christopher Namara, the Kabale District Community Development Officer and Chairman Organizing committee, reiterated that entertainment groups and service providers have been contacted, and various sub-committees have been formed to ensure vibrant celebrations.

Kyateeka revealed that the ministry is actively working on finalizing other programs, such as Sexuality Education guidelines for out-of-school youth, which are expected to be launched by President Museveni.

He anticipated Over 5000 people to attend the function. He also revealed that there will be mandatory COVID-19 tests for Very Important People, while locals will be required to maintain distance from the president during the event

During the international youth week from 5th to 11th August, in celebration of National Youth Day, Kyateeka says a plan is underway to plant 1000 trees in an undisclosed area in Kabale District.

According to Bernard Mwambara, the Administrator for National youth council Secretariat, the trees are being provided by the Ministry of Water and Environment, and various activities, including dialogues on the theme, community engagements, and topical discussions on accelerating recovery from Covid-19 and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda, will take place in Kabale District, led by the National Youth Council Secretariat and the Ministry of Gender, Labor, and Social Development.

Lieutenant Alex Tusingwire, an intelligence officer attached to the Special Force Command, emphasized that they typically do not accept gifts for the president during national celebrations.

He also acknowledged the heightened security measures on the day of the celebrations, stating that only authorized individuals will be allowed to bring phones into the venue.

Additionally, he requested service providers to undergo vetting before the event.
