OBONGI – The Joint Security Task Teams of the Police and UPDF in the North West Nile Region and Obongi district have apprehended a key member of the self-styled rebel group known as the Uganda National Rescue Front II.
The suspect in custody has been identified as Bashir Surundu, a 21-year-old resident hailing from Ayago village, Okuyo Parish, in Obongi district.
According to SCP Enanga Fred, the spokesperson for the Uganda Police, the disgruntled group has been responsible for a spate of armed robberies and violent attacks in both Yumbe and Obongi districts.
During the interrogation, Surundu confessed to being part of the rebel group and revealed that he was searching for food at the River shore to provide for his fellow colleagues.
Among those mentioned were Adinani Renda of Kulubi, Yumbe district; Akange Thuthu of Tikijure, Yumbe; Ngulu resident of Waka, Itula sub-county, in Obongi; Jamali of Tikijure Town Council, and “Boy,” also from Tikijure.
Following the arrest, the suspect was handed over to the UPDF at Kulukulu barracks for further investigation.
Enanga expressed gratitude to the community at Parolinya landing site for their remarkable vigilance, which played a pivotal role in identifying and capturing the suspect. He also highlighted that the group’s leaders, ARIS Habibu and Yassin Ssadala Dinga, are still on the wanted list, and efforts to apprehend them continue.
