Kabale University Launches Institute of Tourism & Hospitality to Elevate Kigezi’s Tourism Sector

KABALE – In a move to bolster the study of tourism in the Kigezi sub-region, Kabale University has inaugurated the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality.

The launch ceremony, held at the institute’s premises on Kikungiri hill, Kabale municipality in South Western Uganda  was presided over by Eng. Ivan Mbabazi Batuma, the Kigezi Tourism cluster chairperson.

Dr Christine Ampumuza, the head of the newly established institute, expressed immense pride in this milestone, highlighting the institute’s mission to provide top-notch education that produces skilled and knowledgeable tourism practitioners. These graduates are expected to have a positive impact on both the region and the global tourism industry.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Joy Kwesiga, the Vice-Chancellor of Kabale University, emphasized the institute’s significance to the Kigezi sub-region. With its abundant tourism attractions, the region serves as the perfect backdrop for nurturing future tourism leaders.

Eng. Ivan Batuma, in his address, encouraged students to utilize their acquired expertise to contribute to the development of their communities. By doing so, they can become catalysts for growth, sparking positive change within the localities they serve.

The Institute of Tourism and Hospitality is poised to bridge the gap between academia and the dynamic tourism industry, as Eng. Batuma highlighted. By introducing innovative approaches, the institute aims to promote sustainable tourism practices, ensuring the preservation of the region’s natural wonders.

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, Associate Professor Caleb Tamwesigire, warmly reassured the esteemed guests that he is committed to fostering a strong collaboration with the Institute, aiming to further enhance its positive impact on regional development. He attributed the unit’s transformation into an institute to the collective dedication and effort of its members, and he wholeheartedly commended them for their hard work and outstanding teamwork.

Kigezi sub-region, renowned for its exceptional tourism offerings, boasts several notable attractions. Among them is the Bwindi-Mgahinga conservation area, a sanctuary that shelters more than 70% of the world’s mountain gorillas. Additionally, the region takes pride in Lake Bunyonyi, Africa’s second-deepest lake, which adds to its allure as a must-visit destination.
