KAMPALA: Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has released the results of the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams.
The ceremony, held at State House Nakasero, was overseen by the Minister of Education, Janet Kataha Museveni.
Dan Odongo, the Executive Director of UNEB, reported an overall increase in the number of candidates. Of the total, 180,471 (49.5%) were male, while 183,198 (50.5%) were female, indicating 3,527 more female candidates than male ones for UCE 2023.
Odongo noted improvements in English Language, Religious Education, Mathematics, and Biology, while declines were observed in History, Agriculture, and Physics. However, performance in other subjects remained relatively stable.
In English Language, there was a notable decrease in the tendency to regurgitate passages, likely contributing to the marked improvement in candidate performance.
Overall, the 2023 examination results surpassed those of the previous year, with a 0.5% decrease in the failure rate.
Female candidates outperformed males in English Language, while males showed better performance in History, Geography, Sciences, and Commerce. In Chemistry, although males excelled in higher grades, females achieved a slightly higher pass rate overall.
This gender disparity in performance has been consistent over the years.
