SHEEMA: The General Secretary of Sheema Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative Union, Godwin Twinomujuni, has expressed concern over the significant reduction in milk volumes due to the ongoing dry spell, advising farmers to embrace zero grazing.
Speaking to our reporter on Thursday, Twinomujuni revealed that earlier this year, they were collecting 3,500 liters of milk daily. However, since the onset of the dry spell, this amount has drastically dropped to a meager 900 liters from local farmers each day.
Twinomujuni attributed the reduction in milk production to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in March. He emphasized that during the dry season, farmers typically experience low milk volumes due to the lack of green pastures and water for their cattle.

However, Twinomujuni advised farmers to plan ahead for the dry spell by purchasing and storing hay and silage for their cattle to boost milk production. He also encouraged them to adopt the zero grazing model, which requires less land compared to traditional paddocking.

Twinomujuni urged the Sheema district production teams and health inspectors to oversee the quality control of milk to prevent adulteration, a common issue among farmers during the dry season.
