Seven PhD graduates were among the 1,673 students who received degrees and diplomas during Kabale University’s 10th graduation ceremony held on Friday at the university grounds in Kabale Municipality.

The event, presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joy Kwesiga, saw 62 students recognized for outstanding academic performance.

Prof. Kwesiga commended the graduates for their hard work and perseverance, noting the steady rise in the number of PhD awardees, from two last year to seven this year.

“This is an encouraging trend that demonstrates the university’s steady academic progress,” she said.

She attributed the institution’s continued growth to its transition into a public university, which she said has expanded access to higher education and opened new opportunities for collaboration, research, and innovation.

“Our progress is hinged on the fact that we are a public university,” Prof. Kwesiga emphasized, adding that this has enabled the institution to increase student enrollment, diversify academic programs, and enhance staff development and research output.

Prof. Kwesiga also highlighted major strides in research, innovation, and staff development, noting that the university continues to implement projects addressing the needs of the Kigezi region and Uganda as a whole.

She called upon residents and leaders in the region to continue supporting the university as a key driver of local development.

The Chairperson of the University Council, Hon. Adison Kakuru, appealed to the Kabale District Local Government to allocate additional land to facilitate the university’s expansion.

“The land we received when the university started is almost fully utilized. We need more space to expand and create a conducive teaching and learning environment,” he said.

Kakuru also called for increased government funding, citing the rapid growth in student numbers and rising operational demands. He urged graduates to demonstrate commitment, humility, and service to their communities.

“Use the knowledge you have acquired to make wise choices and serve beyond self. Carry the Kabale University name with integrity,” he advised.

The guest speaker, Justice Karooli Lwanga Ssemwogerere of the Kabale High Court, encouraged graduates to continue advancing academically and professionally.

“Those with diplomas should go for degrees, those with degrees should go for masters, and those with masters should strive for further academic excellence,” he said.

Justice Ssemwogerere cautioned students and graduates against the misuse of technology, urging them to embrace innovation responsibly.

“Do not lose your naturality and wisdom to Artificial Intelligence. Use technology, but remain human,” he advised.
