The Ministry of Health has launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances behind a medication error during the ongoing Integrated Child Health Days (ICHD) in Ntungamo District.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Dr. Daniel J. Kyabayinze, on behalf of the Director General of Health Services, health workers and support staff involved will face appropriate disciplinary and corrective measures.
The incident occurred on Thursday, 30th October 2025, at Kajumbajumba Primary School in Kyafoora Parish, Rugarama North Subcounty, where a district health team unintentionally administered Phenobarbitone, a medicine used to control epileptic seizures, instead of Albendazole, which is used for deworming.
A total of 340 children received the medicine, with 100 developing side effects such as drowsiness, sleepiness, vomiting, headache, dizziness, slowed speech, and constipation.
All affected children were promptly taken to Itojo General Hospital, Rwashamaire Health Center IV, and Rubaare Health Center IV, where they received immediate care, were stabilized, and discharged.
The Ministry expressed deep regret over the incident and extended apologies to the children, parents, and the community.
“The safety and wellbeing of all Ugandans, especially children, remain our top priority,” said Dr. Kyabayinze.
The Ministry commended the Ntungamo District Health Team and hospital staff for their swift response, which ensured all affected children received timely medical attention.
It also reassured the public that all future health outreach and immunization activities will continue safely under strengthened supervision and quality assurance measures.
