Students from higher institutions of learning in Kabale District have been Challenged to take advantage of voluntary work as a pathway to gaining practical experience and essential skills needed to secure jobs in today’s competitive employment landscape.

The call was made by Amon Mukamasiimwe, Head of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department at Uganda Christian University’s Bishop Barham College in Kabale on Wednesday while delivering a keynote address during a one-day Career Guidance Seminar organized by Hearing Heart, a Kabale-based Christian ministry focused on youth empowerment through sports, music talent development, career guidance, and spiritual growth.

The seminar, hosted at the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE), formerly National Teachers College Kabale, attracted students from various universities, tertiary institutions, and selected Advanced Level secondary schools across Kabale Municipality.

Emphasizing the need for early preparation, Mukamasiimwe encouraged students to actively seek volunteer opportunities to build relevant skills and hands-on experience even before completing their studies.

“The job market today is highly competitive, but those with skills and experience have a clear advantage. Before and after graduation, don’t sit back waiting for jobs. Use your time to volunteer and grow your capabilities,” he advised.

He also challenged students to use social media platforms productively by showcasing their talents and professional abilities, rather than engaging in gossip and entertainment. According to him, employers are increasingly looking for critical thinkers and solution-oriented individuals.

“The world is looking for people who can identify problems and provide solutions. Position yourself as an asset, not a burden, in the workplace,” he noted.

Hearing Heart Director Arnold Arinaitwe said the seminar was organized to equip young people with the knowledge and mindset needed to navigate the growing global unemployment crisis, which continues to frustrate many educated youths.

He drew inspiration from the biblical story of King Solomon in 1 Kings 3:9, emphasizing the importance of wisdom and discernment in making life and career decisions.

Representing the Dean of UNITE Kabale Campus, Chief Librarian Patrick Katusabe commended the organizers for selecting the institution as the host venue, noting that the seminar came at a critical time as the institute prepares to graduate its first cohort of Bachelor’s degree students by 2028 or 2029.

Globally, youth unemployment remains a significant concern. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Employment and Social Trends 2026 report, the global youth unemployment rate stands at approximately 12.4 percent, with around 260 million young people out of work.

In Uganda, the situation mirrors the global trend, with youth unemployment at 12.3 percent, according to the 2024 National Census. Each year, over 700,000 young people enter the labor market, but only about 90,000 secure formal employment, leaving a majority without stable jobs.
