Police in Abim District have launched investigations into a physical altercation involving a priest and a church member at All Saints Church of Uganda, Abim, in North Karamoja Diocese.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday towards the end of the church service during announcements, involving Rev Canon Richard Ongom, a retired clergy serving contract and Innocent Oyoo, the LC 2 Chairperson for Waimer Ward in Abim town council.

According to an update issued by the Church of Uganda Communication Officer, Adams Sadiiki, the District Police Commander for Abim, SP Olang Moses, said Oyoo sought to make an announcement during the service without informing the priest in advance.

Police have since registered complaints from both parties, recorded statements from the two and some witnesses, and issued Police Form 3 (PF3) to both parties to facilitate medical examination.

Sadiiki said the priest presiding over a church service is responsible for worship and all other activities taking place during the service, in accordance with the Church of Uganda’s established liturgical procedures under Faith and Order.

He said anyone wishing to make an announcement during a service is expected to seek permission from the priest responsible and respect the direction given.

“While the Church does not condone violence or physical confrontation by any person, no individual has the right to forcefully take over proceedings or insist on addressing a congregation contrary to the direction of the priest responsible for the service,” Sadiiki said.

He added that the Church would allow police to establish the circumstances surrounding the physical altercation while relevant church authorities handle any ecclesiastical and administrative matters arising from the incident.
