
Thousands of sports enthusiasts and supporters trekked long distances and braved heavy rainfall to attend the grand finale of Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe Tumuheirwe’s Easter Sports Tournament in Rukiga District.
The tournament, which began on January 6, 2025, concluded on Saturday at Rushebeya Playground in Rwamucucu Sub-county. In the boys’ football final, Sindi Ward emerged as champions after defeating Nyakagabagaba Football Team 1-0, with the winning goal scored by Anthony Muhumuza.
In the girls’ category, Rukiga North triumphed over Rukiga South in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regular time. The shootout ended 4-2 in favor of Rukiga North.
The winning boys’ team, Sindi Ward, was awarded a cash prize of Shs 2 million.
While awarding medals and gifts to participating teams, the tournament organizer, Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe Tumuheirwe , also the Deputy Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation praised residents for their unwavering support and commitment to sports.
Dr. Alinaitwe emphasized the significance of sports in promoting physical and mental well-being, fostering teamwork, boosting self-esteem, and enhancing social interaction.
She highlighted how sports improve cardiovascular health, build muscle, and reduce stress, while also teaching essential life skills such as perseverance, discipline, and leadership. She encouraged continued participation in sports and pledged to support development initiatives in the district.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Hassim Magogo, who officiated as the guest of honor, donated three sets of uniforms and 60 footballs to participating teams. He urged parents to support their children in sports, noting its role in national development.
