The independent candidate for the Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament seat, Alex Edgar Muhwezi, has raised concerns over the lack of civic education among voters ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
Speaking after the campaign harmonization meeting organized by the Kabale District Electoral Commission Office at Rukiiko Hall on Monday, Muhwezi described civic education as a fundamental tool for ensuring free and fair elections. He expressed disappointment that the issue continues to receive limited attention from the Electoral Commission, both in terms of funding and institutional commitment.
Muhwezi noted that inadequate voter sensitization often results in confusion and misconduct during election periods. He emphasized that civic education should not be treated as a one-time activity, but rather as an ongoing process that strengthens democratic participation.

The Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament candidate Dan Nabaasa Musinguzi also raised concerns over the rampant defacing of campaign materials and the management of campaign materials for different candidates.
Meanwhile, Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament candidate Grace Ankunda Bwesigye Bekunda expressed confidence in assurances from authorities that all candidates will receive equal security during the ongoing campaign period.
Addressing concerns that ruling party candidates might receive preferential treatment while opposition and independent candidates face inconveniences, Bekunda welcomed the question and highlighted the commitments given by security officials. She emphasized her trust in the authorities’ promise, stating, “Everyone expects that what they have promised will be delivered. They have promised security to each and every candidate, and I believe if they follow their word, then we are all secure.”

Aisha Nansubuga, the Kabale District Returning Officer, called on candidates with security details to have them gazetted so that security agencies are fully informed ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
Nansubuga emphasized that this will help avoid unnecessary fear among voters and fellow candidates. She also urged all candidates to observe the official campaign hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and to maintain discipline, peace, and respect for one another throughout the campaign season.
