Residents of Kisoro District have been encouraged to adopt organic farming practices by using locally made fertilizers instead of inorganic ones, which agricultural experts warn contribute to declining productivity and long-term soil degradation.
The call was made during a sensitization session held on Wednesday at St. Gertrude Secondary School. The event was organized by the Eastern and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF) Uganda in partnership with LAV VIA CAMPESINA. The session targeted members of the school’s Agroecology Club and aimed to promote sustainable farming practices within the wider community.
Speaking at the event, Tumushime Emmanuel, the ESAFF Uganda Chairperson for Kisoro District, cautioned against the continued use of inorganic fertilizers, noting that chemical inputs are a major contributor to poor crop yields and soil infertility over time.
