The Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Honorable Catheline Ndamira Atwakiire, has called on Christians to embrace government initiatives designed to lift Ugandans out of poverty.
Speaking during the Solemnity Mass of Uganda Martyrs Day, Hon. Atwakiire highlighted key programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), EMYOOGA, and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP), urging communities to take full advantage of them at the household level.
She encouraged youth, elders, and persons with disabilities to form well-organized groups with clear goals to fully benefit from these programs.
Hon. Atwakiire emphasized that proper organization and vision are critical to unlocking the full potential of government interventions.
The MP also underscored the importance of renewing and registering for National Identity Cards, noting that access to essential services such as healthcare, education and public transportation depends on proper identification.
Promoting income-generating activities, Hon. Atwakiire encouraged Christians to consider ventures like pig rearing, which she said can help cover school fees, medical bills, and provide manure to enhance agricultural productivity.
She advocated for commercial agriculture as a reliable path to sustainable income and long-term development.
Drawing inspiration from the Uganda Martyrs, she urged Christians to embody their spirit through hard work, unity and cooperation, qualities she said are essential for building both faith and community.
Hon. Atwakiire also warned against divisive politics based on clan, religion, or tribe. She called on citizens to elect leaders based on integrity, a strong work ethic, and dedication to public service, noting that identity-based politics often result in biased leadership and uneven development.
The Solemnity Mass, a significant annual celebration especially revered by the Catholic community, was presided over by Rev. Fr. Christopher Niwagaba. In his homily, Fr. Niwagaba encouraged Christians to emulate the Uganda Martyrs by keeping their spiritual light burning, remaining steadfast in their faith, and being ready to carry their crosses for the sake of Christ.
He urged the faithful to uphold God’s commandments and build a legacy of faith by raising their children in the Church, guided by education and strong moral values. He concluded with a powerful message:
“Once you offer yourself to God and Jesus Christ, you no longer feel the pain through suffering, you gain the Kingdom of God.” He said.
