The International Day of Older Persons is observed annually on October 1. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 14, 1990, through Resolution 45/106, and first celebrated on October 1, 1991.
This year’s observance, themed “Aging with Dignity,” highlights the challenges faced by older people. Philip Ntacyotugira, the Kisoro District Councilor representing older persons, emphasized that senior citizens have played a crucial role in the country’s development by raising children who now contribute to the nation’s progress. Despite this, many older persons are being excluded from government programs intended to improve their livelihoods.
Ntacyotugira also noted that older persons face a range of difficulties, including health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure, with limited access to adequate care.
