Police have heavily deployed at the National Unity Platform (NUP) Headquarters in Makerere-Kavule to block the launch of the party’s youth elections.

The deployment follows a police announcement on Sunday, stating that they had received information about the planned launch of the youth protest vote, scheduled for Monday, 28 April 2025, at the NUP headquarters.

In a statement, police notified the organizers and concerned parties that the proposed event, along with any related activities, would not be permitted.

They further warned all individuals and groups against participating in or facilitating any engagements linked to the launch, citing the need to maintain public order.

Police urged party members and supporters to comply with the directive.

However, the police action sparked widespread outrage among the public, NUP leaders, and supporters.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya criticized the move, describing it as an act of panic by the authorities.

“The partisan police have once again blocked our weekly press conference, which we had dedicated to the upcoming youth election. A cowardly regime in panic,” Rubongoya said.

Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke also condemned the move, asserting that they would not be silenced by the actions of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

“A cowardly regime! We stand against all odds and injustices. We will not be deterred by these efforts to block our voice,” she stated.

NUP President Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, also condemned the police action, accusing the authorities of applying double standards.
