Three high-profile robbers linked to the recent spike in crime in Kabale Municipality and surrounding areas have been arrested, security officials confirmed.
Maj. Godfrey Katamba, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and head of security in Kabale District, confirmed the arrests on Saturday morning.
According to Katamba, Kennedy, the alleged ring leader, was apprehended in Mbarara District. The second suspect who identify has been withheld was arrested in Masaka while in possession of 100 stolen mobile phones taken from victims in Kabale town.
The third, a student at St. Ignatius University Kabale (IGUKA), also whose identity is withheld was found with stolen phones and a television set in Kabale District.
The RDC said the three suspects are believed to be behind a recent attack that left Stephen Natamba, 40, a security guard at Albertine Hotel, dead, and injured 59-year-old businesswoman Loyce Kanyoro of Makanga Cell, Central Division, Kabale Municipality.
Katamba revealed that the suspects were among 18 individuals recently released by Kabale High Court. So far, authorities have managed to re-arrest 14 of those released.
He condemned the rising crime and warned residents against moving around past midnight, particularly on the town outskirts, noting that security patrols have been intensified and further arrests are expected.
