Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Wins National Spelling Bee, Set for Africa Competition

The competition aims to enhance English language proficiency and literacy among Ugandan learners, supporting the country’s transition to English-based education.

Parental Care Nursery and Primary School in Bushenyi is set to represent Uganda at this year’s Africa Spelling Bee Competition in Algeria next month after emerging as the overall national winner.

The national contest, organized by Enjuba Spelling Bee, was held over the weekend at Serena Hotel in Kampala.

The competition aims to enhance English language proficiency and literacy among Ugandan learners, supporting the country’s transition to English-based education.

Arinaitwe Leah, a pupil from Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, was among the top performers and received a dummy cheque worth Shs1.5 million, while other winners were awarded trophies, medals, and scholastic materials.

Other notable spellers included Amollo Jonathan of Tororo Parents School and Lwanga Peter Sendi of Pax Junior School.

At the grand finale, Aaron Kirunda, CEO of Enjuba, announced plans to introduce a new category for children aged 5 to 8 starting next year.

“Data from teachers across the country shows that 84 percent of children who participate in the Spelling Bee gain confidence, while 92 percent improve in reading and spelling,” he said, adding that the competition has significantly boosted literacy and learners’ self-esteem.

Owamasiko Andrela, a trainer at Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, credited the school’s success to consistent practice and teamwork.

“Our performance is a result of constant training and engagement with learners. Trainers provided spelling exercises and guided pupils through rehearsals,” he said.

Headteacher Desmond Tayebwa praised the school’s holistic approach to education, noting that the victory reflects the institution’s values of discipline, focus, and teamwork.

“Our success is built on teamwork and the students’ dedication. We also thank our director for supporting extracurricular activities, which has enabled us to excel in such competitions,” Tayebwa said.

Kyoshabire Iryne, the Spelling Bee Club trainer and patron, expressed excitement about the national win.

“This victory is the result of extensive practice. Students have expanded their vocabulary and improved critical thinking,” she said, adding that spelling proficiency directly enhances academic performance.

“Many students struggle in exams due to poor spelling. Through the Spelling Bee, our learners have gained confidence and accuracy, which will help them excel across all subjects,” Kyoshabire added.
