The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has officially accepted his nomination to contest for the presidency in the 2026–2031 elections, pledging to deliver what he described as “a New Uganda” founded on freedom, justice, and true independence.

Speaking shortly after his nomination on Wednesday, Kyagulanyi said he was humbled by the trust Ugandans had continued to place in him since his first presidential bid in 2021.

He vowed to challenge what he called four decades of misrule, poverty, and oppression under President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

“For 40 long years, one man and a small group of relatives and friends have ruled our country at gunpoint. They have looted the nation and reduced citizens into slaves on their own land,” Kyagulanyi declared. “Uganda is not poor. Our problem is not a lack of wealth, but a lack of leadership.”

The opposition leader called the 2026 election a “protest vote” against injustice, urging Ugandans to turn up in overwhelming numbers that would be “too big to rig.”

He emphasized that the struggle for change would remain “constitutional, legal, and non-violent.”

Kyagulanyi also appealed to Ugandans in the diaspora, whom he described as the country’s “biggest investors,” to continue supporting the struggle for change. He pledged to fight for a Uganda where citizens can return home without fear of abductions or persecution.

In a direct message to President Museveni, Kyagulanyi urged him to allow a peaceful transition of power, saying, “Uganda was here before you, and Uganda will remain long after you are gone. The best guarantee for your legacy is to allow a peaceful and democratic transition.”

He further promised that an NUP-led government would prioritize fair pay for teachers, health workers, and soldiers, support farmers and traders, ensure job opportunities for youth, and create a secure country where citizens are protected rather than terrorized.

Kyagulanyi warned that despite anticipated intimidation, violence, and threats from security forces, his supporters must remain vigilant, disciplined, and fearless. “Fear is the weapon the dictator wants to use against us. We are armed only with the truth and God,” he said.

The NUP leader concluded his address with a pledge that the struggle for freedom would not stop until Ugandans are “in charge of their own destiny.”

“This is not a question of if, but when,” he told supporters. “We shall never give up until we are free, and we shall be free in the end.”
