The Commercial Division of the High Court on Monday morning launched its Mediation Fortnight, a two-week initiative aimed at promoting amicable dispute resolution and easing the burden of case backlogs.
The exercise is taking place at the Division’s premises on Plot 14, Lumumba Avenue, Nakasero, Kampala, with more than 200 cases scheduled for mediation.
Speaking at the launch, HW Zulaika Nanteza, Acting Registrar for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), highlighted the growing significance of mediation in Uganda’s justice system.
“The more we do mediation, the more people will embrace it. Our people want to see to believe,” she said, noting that each round of the exercise has provided new lessons. “This is the third time we are conducting it here at the Division, and every time we learn new basic practices that help us enhance future settlement fortnights.”
Her colleague, HW Jessica Chemeri, Deputy Registrar of the Division, emphasized that the fortnight is not only about reducing case backlogs but also about restoring public trust in the courts.
“With a target of 200 cases, we have engaged 12 mediators, including seven judges, one Deputy Registrar, and four court-accredited mediators, among them retired Justices,” she explained.
The Mediation Fortnight underscores the judiciary’s push to promote mediation as a faster, less adversarial, and more cost-effective pathway to justice. Organizers hope that by providing a practical demonstration of its benefits, more litigants will opt for amicable settlement instead of lengthy courtroom battles.
