Police in Rukungiri District are hunting for a 30-year-old housemaid identified only as Constance, who is suspected of killing her 81-year-old employer following an argument over a mopping rug.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 7:15 a.m. at Nyakabare Cell, Central Ward, Kebisoni Town Council in Rukungiri District. The deceased was identified as Kashillingi Kedress, also known as Muserebende, a peasant resident of the area.
According to police, the deceased had recently employed Constance after finding her wandering around Kebisoni Town Council looking for work. At the time of the incident, the deceased was living with her granddaughter, Catherine Natukunda, Catherine’s son Tumusiime Brighton, and the suspect.
On the morning of the incident, Natukunda and Tumusiime left home, leaving the elderly woman and the housemaid alone. Police say a disagreement between the two over a mopping rug may have escalated into violence.
At approximately 7:20 a.m., Tumusiime returned home and found Kashillingi lying motionless in her bedroom, her head covered with a cloth. The housemaid was nowhere to be found.
Tumusiime alerted neighbors, including Kamuhangire Gilbert and Agaba Peter, who rushed to the scene and confirmed the elderly woman was dead, with visible fresh head injuries.
The matter was reported to Kebisoni Police Post by area Chairman Katamba Richard. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He said the crime scene was processed and documented, statements were recorded from witnesses, and a hoe with suspected bloodstains was recovered as evidence.
Maate revealed that a postmortem examination was also conducted as the search for the suspect continues.
