Kirundo Sub-county in Kisoro District is set to regain a police post after more than four years without one, a gap that has fueled rising criminal activity and insecurity in the area.
The development was confirmed by Kirundo LC5 Sub-county Councilor Louis Bishubeho, who noted that the absence of a police presence has severely undermined law and order. He explained that although the sub-county previously had a police post with operational offices and hostels, it became defunct after all officers were transferred.
Bishubeho said residents have since struggled to access justice, especially in cases involving assault, murder, and other crimes. The nearest active police post is in Nyabwishenya, and delays in responding to emergencies have become common.
Bishubeho added that during a conversation with Kisoro District Police Commander Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusaha, he was assured that if office space and hostel accommodation are availed at the sub-county headquarters, at least five police officers would be deployed to Kirundo to help restore security.
