
Fourteen students from St. Paul’s Rugarambiro Secondary School in Buzaniro village, Nyundo Sub-County, have been hospitalized after a lightning strike hit the school premises on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 PM while students were in their classrooms. According to school authorities, six of the students are currently in critical condition.
Head teacher Obiyari Emmanuel confirmed that the lightning struck two classroom blocks housing Senior One and Senior Two students. Initial reports identified 14 injured students, though there are concerns that more may have been affected but are yet to be identified.
The injured were rushed to Kisoro Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment. Medical staff report that six students remain in critical condition, while the others are under close observation.

Speaking after the incident, Obiyari urged parents and guardians to take additional precautions to protect their children during adverse weather conditions. He emphasized the importance of providing covered shoes, noting that most of the affected students had been wearing open footwear at the time of the strike.
Emmanuel also appealed to the school administration to prioritize the installation of lightning alert and protection systems to prevent future tragedies.
