Minister Musasizi Urges Churches to Champion Development, Fight Poverty

In his homily, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, Bishop of Kabale Diocese, called on Christians to practice generosity and unity in Christ as a foundation for building stronger, more harmonious communities.

The State Minister of Finance in charge of General Duties, Hon. Henry Musasizi, has called on churches across Uganda to take a leading role in promoting development and poverty eradication among their congregations.

Speaking during the golden jubilee celebrations of four sisters from the Convention of Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima, Kabale Diocese on Saturday, Minister Musasizi emphasized that churches can make a lasting impact by offering skills training, literacy programs, and education opportunities to their members.

Minister Musasizi commended the Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima for their outstanding contribution to education in Kabale Diocese, as well as their involvement in income-generating projects, microfinance initiatives, and entrepreneurship programs.

He further encouraged churches to actively raise awareness on social issues such as poverty, advocate for policy changes, and promote social justice.

As Guest of Honour, Dr. Joseph Tumwebaze, one of President Museveni’s coordinators ahead of the 2026 general elections, urged Christians to embrace the peace ushered in by the ruling NRM government.

He encouraged them to take advantage of resources available through government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) to improve their livelihoods.

Dr. Tumwebaze also advised church leaders to use their platforms to guide citizens towards embracing development rather than being misled by “politics of lies and propaganda.”

The event also featured a fundraising drive towards the completion of the Sisters’ accommodation house.

A total of Shs 191,935,000 and 475 bags of cement were collected in cash and pledges, although the project requires Shs 248,269,000 for completion.

The Sisters are Sr Specioza Tushemereirwe born on 9th December 1952. She joined DOLF Congregation in the year 1973.

Sr Tushemereirwe proffesed her 1st vow on 24/8/1975 and her last vow was proffesed on 16th December 2001. She is born from Kigarama parish Mbarara Archdiocese

The other is Sr Judith Byembabazi born from Kakore parish Kabale Diocese on 8th December 1948.

Sr Byembabazi joined DOLF congregation in the year 1973, she proffesed her first vow on 24th August 1975 and her last vow was proffesed on 16th December 2001.

The others are Sr Sephoroza Kantayomba born in 1955 from Rubindi parish Mbarara Archdiocese. She joined DOLF Congregation in the year 1973.

She proffesed her 1st vow on 24th August 1975 and her last vow was proffesed on 16th December 2001.

The last is Sr Agnes Kakuru who joined DOLF congregation in the year 1972. She proffesed her 1st vow on 24th August 1975 and her last vow was proffesed on 16th December 2001. Sr Kakuru is born from Nyakibale Parish Kabale Diocese.

Sr Scholastica Kyobutungi, the Superior General Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima Kabale, said that the golden Jubilee is also intended at fundraising towards raising 248,269,000 ugandan shillings to help complete the construction of an accommodation house for 35 sisters.

Sr Kyobutungi noted that they face a challenge of inadequate accommodation for elderly sisters, infirm sisters, and those working and residing at Rushoroza Mother House.

She said the current facilities are no longer sufficient to accommodate all members comfortably and therefore there is an argent need for a dignified, elderly friendly residence that is accessible for wheelchair users, provides easy access without difficulty and offers a peaceful space for solitude and meditation which are vital for any religious community.

The daughter of Our Lady of Fatima were founded in 1952 in Kabale Diocese Ugabda by Sr Amedeo Byabali DM, She was assisted by Rev Fr Paul Mischler of the Missionaries of Africa.

Today, there are 179 sisters serving in the twenty eight communities across thirteen districts in Uganda including Kabale, Rubanda, Kisoro, Rukiga, Kanungu, Rukungiri, Mitooma, Ntungamo, Ibanda, Kazo, Mbarara, Kampala and Moroto.
