Several people were injured on Monday morning after a road traffic accident involving motorcycles and vehicles escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential aspirant Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu.
According to the Uganda Police Force, the crash occurred at around 11:30am near Namyoya Village along the Kalagi–Kayunga Road.
Preliminary findings indicate that a speeding motorcycle within the convoy rammed into the back of another vehicle, triggering a pile-up as several other motorcycles crashed in quick succession.
Moments later, a white Mitsubishi vehicle, registration number UAZ 064H, bearing campaign imagery of the aspirant, also collided with the motorcycles involved.
Several riders and passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital for treatment, while others with minor injuries left the scene with their motorcycles.
The incident was registered at Naggalama Police Station. The vehicles and motorcycles involved, including the Mitsubishi UAZ 064H and bikes registered as UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T and UFQ 250Q, have since been towed to the station yard for inspection.
The injured persons confirmed so far include:
- Kewanza Bashir, 27 (passenger)
- Kakaire Bashir, 35
- Ssepereza Musa, 40 (passenger)
- Kisomba Michael, 28 (motorcycle rider from Nansana)
- Ssewaya Eric, 23 (motorcycle rider)
- Mutagubya Robert, 24 (motorcycle rider)
Police attribute the crash to reckless riding and dangerous road behaviour within the convoy.
Officers further noted that earlier in the day, campaign boards displaying Kyagulanyi’s images had been placed in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic and endangering other road users.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke issued a stern warning to all political actors, stressing the need for strict adherence to traffic laws during campaign activities.
“Irresponsible road use as demonstrated in this unfortunate incident will not be tolerated. Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct and ensure safety for all road users,” he stated.
Investigations are ongoing.
