President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was on Tuesday officially nominated as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential flag bearer for the 2026–2031 term, reaffirming his grip on the ruling party and unveiling an ambitious agenda for Uganda’s future.
Speaking moments after his nomination, Museveni reflected on Uganda’s transformation since he assumed power in 1986 and pledged to build on those gains.
“Where we are moving to now is to again convince the people of Uganda of what has been achieved in the past, and what we are planning to do next,” he said.
Museveni outlined two key priorities for his next term.
The first is to harness the country’s expanding middle class and foreign investment to propel Uganda from lower–middle-income status to high–middle-income, with the long-term goal of reaching first-world standards.
He pointed to the growth of the economy as evidence of progress, noting that the country’s GDP has doubled within a single term, from $34 billion to $66 billion, driven by investments in infrastructure, electricity, telecommunications, and education.
“People in the world are looking for a peaceful and profitable area where to invest,” Museveni said, adding that Uganda’s stability continues to attract global capital.
His second focus is on “mass issues,” ensuring ordinary citizens share in the nation’s economic gains. Among his pledges are free education for all children in government schools, timely maintenance of roads, access to essential medicines in health facilities, safe water in every village, and bringing every Ugandan into the money economy.
“Everybody must be involved in the money economy,” he emphasized, framing inclusive growth as the backbone of his vision.
