KAMPALA: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) have signed a cooperation agreement to facilitate the ideological training of South Sudan’s ruling party leaders.
The training will take place at Uganda’s National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.
During a high-level meeting held on Saturday, leaders from both the NRM Secretariat and a delegation from the SPLM came together to discuss the initiative. The NRM was represented by Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong and National Treasurer Amb. Barbara Nekesa.
Leading the SPLM delegation was Cde. Bol Makueng Youl, SPLM’s Secretary for External Relations, who was accompanied by Dr. John Oryem, Secretary for Training and Research, Antipas Nyok Kucha, Deputy Principal of the Political School, and Dennis Marial Mourwel, the party’s Director for the Political Desk.
Speaking on behalf of the NRM, Secretary General Todwong expressed the party’s commitment to strengthening cohesion and building the capacity of SPLM leaders through ideological training at the Kyankwanzi political leadership school.
“The secretariat pledges to facilitate the training of our brothers and sisters as a contribution to the growth of multiparty democracy in the world’s youngest nation,” Todwong stated.
He also noted that discussions covered potential strategies for enhancing socio-economic empowerment between Uganda and South Sudan, particularly through the promotion of cross-border trade without barriers.
Cde. Bol Makueng Youl expressed gratitude to the NRM for their continued support, especially during South Sudan’s struggle for self-determination.
“You stood by us during our fight for self-determination, and you continue to support us in building our defense, national economy, and democracy,” Bol said. “We look forward to actualizing this training program to ensure our party is run by ideologically grounded leaders who will advance our country.”
NRM National Treasurer Amb. Barbara Nekesa welcomed the cooperation and noted that her party is eager to learn from the SPLM’s political strategies to improve mobilization and service delivery in Uganda.
She further urged SPLM leadership to engage in dialogue with opposition groups to promote peace and unity in South Sudan for the benefit of its citizens.
Rtd. Maj. Awich Pollar, NRM’s Director for External Affairs, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to working with revolutionary parties to support development, citing shared ideas and aspirations.
“It is both right and fitting that such a revolutionary party as the SPLM has paid us this courtesy call to discuss our bilateral progress,” Maj. Awich concluded.
