The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has issued fresh campaign and electoral conduct guidelines to all its newly nominated flag bearers, cautioning them to strictly adhere to the law as the 2026 general election campaigns take shape.

In a circular released by the party’s Directorate of Legal Services and signed by Director Enoch Barata, candidates were congratulated on their nominations and reminded that they now carry the support of over 18 million NRM members.

The directorate urged flag bearers to familiarize themselves with key electoral laws, including the Political Parties and Organizations Act, the Electoral Commission Act, the Parliamentary Elections Act, and the Local Governments Act.

The circular outlined a set of “dos and don’ts” for candidates, emphasizing the need for peaceful, issue-based, and law-abiding campaigns. Among the dos, candidates are required to follow Electoral Commission guidelines, promote the NRM manifesto, and respect opposing views.

They are also permitted to provide refreshments at campaign planning meetings, provided such expenses are declared as part of their campaign budgets.

On the other hand, the don’ts were heavily emphasized, with the party warning against bribery in any form, whether through money, gifts, or items that could be interpreted as voter inducements.

Candidates were also cautioned against the use of defamatory language, incitement to violence, disruption of rival meetings, and misuse of public resources for campaigns.

The NRM further reminded its candidates that on polling day, gatherings of more than 12 people, canvassing for votes, public singing, distribution of campaign materials, or the sale of alcohol would be prohibited. Any violation, the circular warned, could amount to an electoral offence and risk disqualification.

Barata urged all flag bearers to “follow the law to the letter,” stressing that discipline, peaceful campaigns, and respect for opponents would not only safeguard their candidature but also uphold the integrity of the party.
