The Executive Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Dr. Silver Mugisha, has provided a comprehensive update on both immediate and long-term initiatives the Corporation is undertaking to enhance water access and service delivery across Kampala.
“We have the water, but we must now deliver it to every household reliably,” remarked Dr. Mugisha during an engagement with selected customers and political leaders from Kampala’s most water-stressed areas.
The meeting was convened to share progress and discuss solutions to the persistent water supply challenges in parts of the city.
Currently, Kampala produces 400 million litres of water daily, exceeding the current demand of 320 million litres. However, the main challenge lies not in production, but in the limitations of the existing distribution network, which struggles to deliver water equitably to all households.
To address this, the Government has secured USD 100 million (approximately UGX 400 billion) to fund a major infrastructure project aimed at expanding and rehabilitating the water supply network in Kampala and surrounding areas.
The project has already commenced and is expected to be completed within two to three years.
In anticipation of future demand, NWSC is also planning to increase daily water production capacity to 480 million litres.
“We are not waiting for long-term solutions alone. Immediate interventions, such as network re-zoning, installation of booster stations, and system optimizationare already underway to stabilize supply in affected areas,” Dr. Mugisha emphasized.
He acknowledged the vital role played by customers who consistently pay for their water services, noting that such revenue is critical in supporting short-term interventions while major infrastructure upgrades are in progress.
Dr. Mugisha also directed implementation teams to fast-track their work and urged the public to cooperate with contractors as they lay new pipes and upgrade community infrastructure.
Beyond water supply, Dr. Mugisha highlighted NWSC’s commitment to improving sewage management and addressing community concerns transparently and inclusively.
He reaffirmed the Corporation’s dedication to safeguarding public assets and maintaining open communication with all stakeholders throughout the implementation process.
