UN Peacekeepers Urged to Enhance Intelligence and Strengthen Community Ties in Somalia

Military Information Officer Captain Joseph Mada emphasized the importance of proactive intelligence sharing to pre-empt and neutralize emerging threats.

The Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) under United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU XI), Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, has emphasized the vital need for improved intelligence operations and stronger civil-military cooperation to support ongoing peacekeeping efforts in Somalia.

During a recent meeting with staff officers, Lt Col Barigye highlighted the urgency of bolstering intelligence-sharing systems and fostering closer collaboration among peacekeeping partners to address persistent security threats, particularly from Al-Shabaab.

“Effective intelligence gathering, coupled with strategic civil-military engagement, is essential in overcoming the security challenges we face,” he stated.

He also underscored the importance of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) in enhancing the relationship between the military and civilian actors, including the United Nations and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), formerly AUSSOM.

“CIMIC operations are key to facilitating the flow of information, strengthening community engagement, and amplifying the overall impact of peacekeeping missions,” he added.

His message was reinforced by Deputy Commander Major Jacob Gowan Kaburika, who urged personnel to remain unified in their mission.

“Let’s work together to strengthen our mission. Our ultimate objective is to enhance stability and security in the region while protecting UN staff, facilities, and installations in Mogadishu,” he said.

Military Information Officer Captain Joseph Mada emphasized the importance of proactive intelligence sharing to pre-empt and neutralize emerging threats.

“This enables us to stay ahead of potential risks and better support ongoing security operations,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Captain Mustafa Ssegonja, Civil-Military Relations Officer, stressed the importance of cultural awareness in operational strategy.

“A respectful and inclusive approach builds trust, promotes cooperation, and creates a secure environment conducive to fulfilling our mission’s objectives,” he said.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment among UNGU XI personnel to contribute to Somalia’s stability through integrated intelligence and civil-military strategies.
