The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have rolled out initial activities for the 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary, with advance teams already engaging leaders and communities across Greater Kigezi.
The national celebrations will be hosted in six districts, Kisoro, Kabale, Rubanda, Kanungu, Rukungiri, and Rukiga in recognition of the region’s pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
Maj. Gen. Henry Masiko, the Joint Staff, Political Commissariat and overall coordinator of the event, said Kigezi’s deep historical contribution made it the natural choice to host this year’s commemorations.
“Kigezi was a key recruitment base for the liberation forces during the fight against bad governance. Its people stood firm in the struggle against dictatorship, especially during the FRONASA-led efforts to overthrow Idi Amin,” Maj. Gen. Masiko told leaders in Kisoro District.
Early Start Due to Election Season
Unlike previous years when Tarehe Sita activities begin in December, this year’s rollout has been brought forward due to the upcoming general elections.
UPDF officials say the adjusted schedule will give citizens ample time to participate in both the national celebrations and the electoral process.
Community-Centered Activities Planned
The anniversary will feature a range of civil-military activities, including:
- Short-term engineering projects with lasting community impact
- Free medical camps
- Patriotism and mentorship campaigns in schools
- Friendly football matches
- Veterans’ engagements and welfare support
Maj. Gen. Masiko emphasized that Tarehe Sita is not merely ceremonial but a gesture of gratitude to the citizens.
“This is our corporate social responsibility, a way of sharing our birthday with the people. We are working closely with local leaders to ensure the benefits reach the grassroots,” he said.
Local Leaders Welcome the Celebration
Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Hajji Badru Sebyara commended the UPDF for its continued people-centered approach.
“Tarehe Sita strengthens the bond between the UPDF and the population, which is essential for safeguarding peace and stability,” he noted.
Bufumbira South MP Hon. Alex Niyonsaba said the region is ready to host the nation.
“Kigezi is known for its hospitality. We are honored to host this historic event and we shall rise to the occasion,” he affirmed.
Reconnaissance Underway
Two reconnaissance teams were dispatched to the region on October 10, 2025. Maj. Gen. Masiko is coordinating activities in Kisoro, Kabale, and Rubanda, while Maj. Gen. Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of 2nd Division, is leading operations in Kanungu, Rukungiri, and Rukiga.
As the UPDF gears up for the official celebrations in February, communities in Kigezi are already rallying in anticipation, marking yet another milestone in Uganda’s enduring story of unity, resilience, and shared destiny.
