VP Alupo Launches Construction of Shs 999m Modern Theatre at Katakwi General Hospital

The facility will be constructed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade as part of government’s wider efforts to upgrade surgical services in the district.

Vice President Rtd Maj Jessica Alupo has launched the construction of a modern theatre at Katakwi General Hospital, a project estimated to cost the government Shs 999 million.

The facility will be constructed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade as part of government’s wider efforts to upgrade surgical services in the district.

Dr. Joseph Emurim, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent who represented the District Health Officer, described the theatre as a long-awaited development that will significantly enhance healthcare delivery. He urged the community to closely monitor the project to ensure accountability and sustainability.

Eng. Samuel Kusimbira, representing the Commissioner of Health Infrastructure George Otim, explained that the new theatre will feature two operating rooms, an office, and improved surgical spaces. He encouraged qualified health professionals to apply for positions once the facility is complete.

Captain Opio, the UPDF Engineering Brigade officer in charge of Eastern Uganda, assured residents that the work will be completed on time and to the required standard, in line with a presidential directive on quality service delivery. He also revealed plans to renovate Ngariam Health Centre III and undertake other health projects within Katakwi District.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Samuel Berkley Opio said the district had received Shs 9 billion this quarter to support health services, including recruitment of new staff. He asked the UPDF to share bills of quantities to enable close monitoring of the works.

Katakwi LCV Chairperson George Omolo commended the Ministry of Health for delivering four ambulances to the district, saying the vehicles will greatly boost emergency response. He also urged residents to support the ruling NRM government, which he credited for spearheading development.

Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Stephen Okure Ilemukorit pledged to closely monitor the project until completion, thanking President Yoweri Museveni and the Vice President for prioritizing Katakwi’s health infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, September 9, 2025, Vice President Alupo applauded the government for maintaining peace and stability, which she said has enabled social and economic development. She urged residents to embrace health initiatives such as immunization, maternal health services, and preventive care.

“The construction of this theatre reflects government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery at all levels,” Alupo said, warning officials against corruption in the implementation of the project.

She further encouraged communities to embrace government poverty-alleviation programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Livelihood Programme, and UWEP, as pathways to self-reliance.
