RUKUNGIRI: Police in Rukungiri District have arrested three suspects for the alleged murder of the family head, Vincent Byamukama (53), in Nyakishenyi Sub County.
The suspects are Everino Mutesigensi, 44, Byamukama’s wife; Hildah Nishaba, 19, his daughter; and Moses Akanjijuka, 21, his son. All are residents of Mushuga village, Katonya parish, Nyakishenyi sub-county in Rukungiri District.
According to a police statement, Byamukama had long-standing domestic issues with his family members, including his wife Mutesigensi, daughter Nishaba, and grandson Ainamani Wilbraod, a 6-year-old male juvenile. These conflicts were attributed to his alcoholism.
On June 4, 2024, at around 9:00 PM, Byamukama returned home drunk and chased away his wife Everino and daughter Hildah, leaving only his grandson Wilbraod. The two women fled and would only return to cook after confirming that Byamukama had gone to the trading center for more alcohol. After cooking, they would retreat to the bush.
On June 8, 2024, at around 8:00 PM, thinking Byamukama was still at the trading center, Everino and Hildah returned home to cook. Before the food was ready, Byamukama suddenly appeared with a sharp panga and chased them, but failed to catch them.
Angry and hungry, Everino and Hildah stayed in hiding until around 11:00 PM, when they returned home. They found the access door open and went to the bedroom, where Vincent was sleeping with a panga beside his bed. Allegedly, Everino used the panga to cut him on the neck, killing him instantly. Everino and Hildah then carried the body on a mattress to the back of their compound, gathered dried banana leaves and fibers, burned the body, and dumped it in their toilet, which they later demolished on June 9, 2024.
On Thursday, Annet, Vincent’s sister, asked Hildah about her brother’s whereabouts. Hildah told her that he had fallen and died in their toilet. Annet informed her other brother, Twesigye Angelo, who mobilized residents to check the toilet. Finding it demolished with a visible human skull, they reported the matter to Nyakishenyi Police Station, and the police at CPS Rukungiri were notified for further investigation.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, said that the crime scenes were visited, examined, and documented. The body was retrieved from the toilet and taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III for a postmortem to ascertain the actual cause of death.
Maate added that a walking stick stained with suspected blood, burnt pieces of a mattress, and a mat was recovered from both scenes. Everino, Hildah, and Moses Akanjijuka were subsequently arrested and detained at Rukungiri Central Police Station to assist with ongoing investigations.
