KASESE: The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced the resumption of hiking activities to Margherita Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, located in Kasese district, southwestern Uganda.

On May 14, 2024, UWA had temporarily suspended hiking to Margherita Peak as a precautionary measure following a comprehensive assessment triggered by reports of a crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier. A crevasse is a crack in the glacier surface caused by extensive stress within the ice.

In a press release dated August 20, 2024, and signed by UWA Communications Manager Bashir Hangi, UWA confirmed that safety enhancements have been successfully implemented to ensure the well-being of all hikers. Among the key improvements is the construction of a bridge across the crevasse in the Margherita glacier.
