KASESE: Kasese Municipality MP, Hon. Ferigo Kambale, has called on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to find a lasting solution to the recurring floods caused by the Nyamwamba River.
The river’s frequent bursting of its banks has led to devastating consequences, including loss of lives, property destruction, and the displacement of residents.
Following the recent floods on September 7, 2024, which claimed two lives and destroyed property, Hon. Kambale wrote to the President, reiterating his earlier request for a special budget to address the issue. Since 2011, floods have claimed 52 lives.
In his letter, Hon. Kambale proposed several measures to mitigate the problem, including de-silting the 25-kilometer stretch of the Nyamwamba River from the mountains to its confluence with Queen Elizabeth National Park, constructing a strong wall along the riverbanks, and procuring an excavator and equipment for regular de-silting.
Additionally, he requested the establishment of a special financial consideration fund for the 52 affected families who have lost loved ones and property.
Hon. Kambale expressed optimism, revealing that President Museveni had directed the Prime Minister to compile a comprehensive report on the Nyamwamba River floods during a recent Cabinet meeting.
The Prime Minister has been given a month to send a team of experts to study the river and submit a report to the President for action.
The MP’s efforts aim to bring a permanent solution to this long-standing problem, ensuring the safety and well-being of Kasese residents.
