KAMPALA: A group of MPs has expressed outrage at remarks made by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Commander of Defence Forces, claiming that Uganda will only be led by the military and not civilians.

The lawmakers argue that these comments undermine democratic principles that empower Ugandans to choose their leaders.

During interviews at Parliament on Monday, some NRM MPs defended Muhoozi, saying his endorsement of President Museveni has weakened the Opposition, which can no longer rely on accusations of nepotism.

However, Busiro East MP Medard Sseggona strongly condemned Muhoozi’s statements, calling them unlawful. He criticized the endorsement of a political candidate by a serving army officer, which he said reflects poorly on the country’s leadership and governance.

Sseggona sarcastically thanked Muhoozi for endorsing Museveni, suggesting it would provide the Opposition with a familiar political opponent, while calling for Muhoozi’s return to the barracks.

John Musila (Bubulo East) dismissed those who had abandoned the NRM to support Muhoozi, mocking them as “opportunists” and praising Muhoozi for backing his father.

Musila argued that the Opposition has lost its footing and should concede defeat, stating that their accusations of dynastic politics have fallen apart.

Bbale County MP Charles Tebandeke urged Ugandans not to interpret Muhoozi’s remarks as the end of his presidential ambitions. He suggested that Muhoozi still requires more political grooming and that his return to supporting Museveni is part of a longer-term strategy.

Tebandeke described Muhoozi’s comments as confused, emphasizing that the presidency cannot be decided by one individual’s feelings or family ties.

Kagabo enthusiastically encouraged his supporters to embrace the change, declaring his commitment to campaigning for the ruling party.
