Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He explained that around 4:00 p.m., while Janet Duhoranenawe was descending a hill in Nyabiyonga village, she saw Muhawenimana climbing up toward her home. Duhoranenawe observed Bandiho following Muhawenimana, eventually stopping her. The two began to fight, during which Bandiho allegedly overpowered Muhawenimana and strangled her with her own clothing.

Maate reported that a mob subsequently attacked Bandiho, severely assaulting him in retaliation. Police were notified and quickly responded, visiting and documenting the scene, recording witness statements, and transporting Muhawenimana’s body to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
