LAMWO: Lamwo District on Sunday, January 19, 2025, registered eight new suspected cases of cholera, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 98 in the 11 days since the outbreak was confirmed on January 7, 2025, in Agoro Sub-County. Among the 98 total cases, 52 are female, while 46 are male.
The District Health Officer for Lamwo, Dr. Omoya Denis Ochula, shared a situational report on January 19, detailing the district’s response to the outbreak. According to the report, 89 patients (40 male and 49 female) have been discharged from Agoro Health Center following successful treatment.
The report also highlighted that 254 contacts have been treated at home, and 123 households have been provided with water purifiers to ensure safe water for consumption.
Dr. Ochula stated that the eight new suspected cases (two females and six males) tested positive on Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and have been admitted to Agoro Health Center III for further management.
However, he noted significant challenges hampering the response efforts, including low motivation and inadequate facilitation for staff and Village Health Teams (VHTs), insufficient resources for responding health workers, and a lack of fuel for monitoring, surveillance, and community engagement activities.
In an effort to curb the spread of cholera, Dr. Ochula reported that screening efforts have been intensified at key border points of entry, including Agoro, Madi Opei, Aweno-Olwiyo, Ngomoromo, and Waligo.
