KANUNGU: Police in Kanungu District have launched a manhunt for a man accused of decapitating his biological father in a dispute over a land agreement in Kanungu Town Council.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the suspect, identified as Erias Nahawera, allegedly killed his father, Bagambana Nyansio, after a disagreement over land documents.
Nyansio, who had planned to sell part of his land to pay for medical treatment, asked his son for the necessary documents, but Nahawera refused.
On Wednesday, Nyansio, 75, woke up feeling unwell and wanted to seek treatment at Katate Health Center IV. He asked his son for money to facilitate the trip, but Nahawera declined.
This refusal reportedly angered Nyansio, prompting him to demand the land documents so he could sell part of his property.
The situation escalated when Nyansio, around 11:30 a.m., left for the health center, while his wife went to a nearby bar. By 7:00 p.m., upon her return, she found Nyansio’s lifeless body on the bed, decapitated. A bloodstained machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was found beside him.
The area chairperson, Twesigye Koronerio, alerted the police, and a team, including a canine unit, visited the scene. They documented evidence and interviewed witnesses.
The police dog tracked the suspect’s whereabouts to Nahawera’s home, but he is now on the run. The body was transferred to Katate Health Center IV for a postmortem examination.
Maate confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to locate Nahawera and another individual, the deceased’s herdsman, who is also believed to be on the run.
