KISORO: Authorities in Kisoro Municipality have clarified that there are no plans to sell off Gatimba Market.
In a letter dated March 5, 2025, Alikwan Ayub Kisubi, the Kisoro Municipality Town Clerk, addressed concerns raised by citizens, including Gatimba market vendors, about the alleged intention to sell the market property to an investor.
The rumor of the market’s sale had sparked anger among vendors and sections of the public. The identity of the purported investor remains unknown.
Ayub confirmed that Kisoro Municipal Council has no intention of relocating or evicting traders from Gatimba Market. He described the claims of an investor taking over the market land as baseless propaganda, propagated by unscrupulous individuals.
He further emphasized that Gatimba Market remains the property of Kisoro Municipal Council, and there are no plans to sell it, lease it, or dispose of it in any way.
Ayub reassured traders that they are free to continue using the facility until the Market and Trade Infrastructure Program (MATIP) market is constructed, at which point they will be guided on the next steps by the authorities.
Gatimba Market is one of the main markets for food items in Kisoro Town, including Matooke from Ntungamo, Irish potatoes, and vegetables.
