The Ugandan Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and press rights. Article 29 explicitly states:

“Every person shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression, which shall include freedom of the press and other media.”

By failing to uphold this fundamental right, the government betrayed the public trust. Similar crackdowns on press freedom have sparked backlash in other countries, demonstrating that suppressing the media often leads to greater resistance.

The NUP’s victory in Kawempe North highlights the growing strength of opposition parties in Uganda. Despite government-imposed media restrictions, the party effectively mobilized support and delivered its message to voters.

Their campaign emphasized press freedom and government accountability issues that resonated with Ugandans frustrated by increasing authoritarianism.

The Electoral Commission (EC) plays a critical role in ensuring free and fair elections. While EC guidelines for the by-election stressed the need to respect candidates’ and voters’ rights, government actions during the campaign failed to meet these expectations.

The NRM’s loss in Kawempe North should serve as a wake-up call. Press freedom abuses have real consequences, and respect for fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and access to information is essential for any democracy.

As Uganda navigates its democratic journey, the government must uphold these principles to maintain public trust and political stability.
